Take A Hike

October 1, 2014

A few weeks ago, while my friends Alice and Grace were visiting for the weekend, we spent most of that Saturday outside exploring Hanging Rock State Park. The park isn’t that far away from Wake, maybe about an hour or so, and after their 9+ hour car ride the day before, we all agreed that some physical activity was desperately needed.

Before heading out to Hanging Rock, we stopped for breakfast at one of my favorite bagel shops in Winston, Bagel Station. I’m pretty sure that their breakfast bagels have some kind of magical restorative powers and the prices are cheaper compared to other breakfast places in town. We fueled up on carbs while making a game plan for the day: we allotted about 4 hours for our trip to give us time to stop by Walmart to pick up camo for the celebrations later that night.

#TBT// that time I ate waffles for breakfast, lunch & dinner in Brussels

September 25, 2014

The program I studied abroad with last fall included two 10 day breaks during the semester and for the first of these breaks my mom flew all the way over from the States to travel with me to Berlin and Brussels. While the history of Berlin is fascinating and the city is a weird combination of old and incredibly modern, it was really the quaint little city of Brussels that really captured my heart on that trip. We were only in the city for about 2.5 days total and we made the most of our stay by exploring the streets of Brussels, sharing whipped cream covered waffles and talking to the locals.

Sunny (studious) Sundays

September 23, 2014

I have to admit that I’ve been a pretty boring undergrad this weekend. I have a few papers and midterms coming up in the next couple of weeks, so my weekend involved long days in the library and early nights in bed. I had woken up early on Sunday to set up for the Homecoming Brunch that my sorority hosted, and since I was already up I decided that I had some time to workout before the studying commenced once again.

There were blue skies for miles so instead of doing the elliptical or stair stepper, I did stadium runs instead. The first six rounds were great and I was feeling pretty smug good about myself. I took a short break though when the track team also started doing stadium runs because they were all super fit. And because I’m a super awkward person I pretended like I was getting very important text messages that I had to respond to ASAP (total lie). It all really went downhill from there and I spent the next four rounds wishing that I was doing anything other than running up and down the bleachers, mostly sleeping in or perhaps watching Bones on Netflix. But I finished and was proud of myself as I tottered away to finish my workout.

The Girls are Back in Town

September 17, 2014

Way back in June or July, when I was still in London for the summer, my friends and I made plans for the two of them to come up to North Carolina and visit for a weekend. We excitedly talked about it for months and they finally made it up this past Friday! We’ve talked about visiting one another since our freshman year so it was a long time coming, I guess you could say.

Alice and Grace drove up from Florida on Friday and made it to Wake around 7 PM after a nine hour drive. But like the champs that they are, they hit the ground running and we went off to dinner in downtown Winston-Salem. Alice is vegetarian, so I looked around for a restaurant that served more than one vegetarian dish and would be relatively inexpensive. I decided to take the two of them to an old favorite of mine, The Old Fourth Street Filling Station. Although I haven’t been that often in the past year, my friends and I used to eat at Fourth Street all the time our freshman and sophomore years.

Go Deacs!

September 9, 2014

Let me start out by saying that the past few days (minus the tiny blips of rain) have been absolutely gorgeous but I didn’t get to enjoy them due to the fact that I caught this killer cold that’s been floating around campus. But with some rest and a lot of soup, I was able to make it out to one of my favorite events of the fall semester–the first tailgate and football game of the year!

College Food Restaurants

Five Points

September 6, 2014

Last weekend my friends and I went out to a restaurant in Winston that I’ve heard a lot about but never been to, Five Points, for my friend’s birthday. The restaurant claims to “Winston-Salem’s finest,” and it’s hard to argue with the diverse menu selections and a staff almost overly eager to assist. We had a large party (there were about twelve of us) and we were seated in our very own room which the other diners in the restaurant were probably thankful for once our conversation got into full swing!
