Tennis, Food & Art

June 30, 2014

On Friday, I had classes per usual throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. My first stop after being let out was Masterpiece London, which is an art fair that’s being held in the Chelsea area for the next week that Sotheby’s got tickets to for us. The entrance was pretty neat—I felt like a celebrity walking down the red carpet—but overall I wasn’t very impressed by what the fair had to offer. It almost felt cheap, almost like they sold out compared to other art fairs I’ve attended like Art Basel Miami. There seemed to be more of an emphasis on luxury goods, such as expensive cars and yachts, rather than on the actual art objects and I got the impression that people attended Masterpiece London to show off how wealthy they are rather than to appreciate an artist’s handiwork.

Last Weekend in Rewind

June 14, 2014

Last Friday we had a pretty easy day at the Institute; all we had planned for the day was visiting Sotheby’s ‘Modern & Post-War British Art’ auction preview in the morning. I enjoyed this sale much more than the Russian Art preview we visited the week before but unfortunately the auction itself, which we watched later this week, was not very successful despite the various big names within the sale. I did end up buying a sale catalogue as a souvenir though!

After our tour, I decided to walk around the area to better acquaint myself and ended up stumbling upon Green Park which I had no idea was anywhere nearby. I grabbed food from a takeaway place and had a nice little picnic in the park, eating while I read my sales catalogue.

Carpe diem (…or take a 4 hour nap)

May 22, 2014

When I landed in London this morning, I could feel that these two coming months would be a huge growing experience for me. Living by yourself in a foreign city is a bit scary but I could already imagine myself strutting up and down the streets of London with the ease of someone who lived in the city all of their lives. This fantasy took a bit of a bruising when I walked straight into a glass door while trying to enter my hotel but we’ll just blame that on my lack of sleep in the past 24 hours. I had big plans to spend the entire rest of the morning and afternoon out and about, only to fall asleep for a solid four hours.

Dad and I are staying in a Marriott in Grosvenor Square, which is in the West End of London. The hotel is pretty swanky and I even got to enjoy afternoon tea before I headed out for my adventure. DSC_0006
