Cathedral of Learning

November 17, 2014

On my last day in Pittsburgh, my dad and I headed over to the University of Pittsburgh’s campus to take in the fall leaves and the sunshine. I was also looking for any excuse to break out my brand new parka from Banana Republic, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Our first stop on our walk was the Cathedral of Learning, otherwise known as the massively tall building that serves as classrooms for both undergrads and graduate students at Pitt. My mom, who went to Pitt’s business school, told me that she had classes on the 53rd floor (or something crazy like that) which blows my mind because most of my classes this semester are on the first floor. I would probably be late to class everyday if my classroom was so far up in the clouds!

I’ve heard that the classrooms look like something out of Hogwarts but unfortunately dad and I had enough trouble finding our way out of the building, so it’s a good bet that even if we had tried we would have gotten stranded on one of the floors.

As we walked across the quad to Heinz Chapel (which, yes, is named after the same family who started the famous ketchup brand!), dad pointed out the bricks engraved with names of past Pitt athletes which included the likes Mike Ditka. I didn’t recognize most of the names which has led me to conclude that I should probably be a little more on top of my sports trivia in the future.

The view of the Carnegie Library from the campus! Way back in the day when I was a senior in high school, I participated in the Pittsburgh Cinderella Ball as a debutante and our charity work went towards the Carnegie Library, so it was nice to see a familiar face after so many years.

Dedicated in 1938, Heinz Chapel is an absolutely gorgeous space which hosts not only religious but also student events throughout the year.

The red doors mark the entrance and make for the perfect picture-taking opportunity. Trust me, dad and I had to wait in line behind a few other families to snag this one… which makes the fact that my eyes are closed all that more heartbreaking.

The interior of the chapel is breathtaking and the stained glass windows create an other-worldly feel when you walk down the nave. An absolutely incredible view; imagine attending a wedding in here!

I don’t know much about the University of Pittsburgh but one thing I can say for sure is that the campus is absolutely gorgeous in the fall!
