Brownie points to those of y’all who know what show I referenced in the title of this post!
On Sunday morning, I met up with my dad and grandparents bright and early to to grab breakfast at Mary’s Gourmet Diner (formerly known and still widely referred to as Breakfast of Course) before everyone headed home. Breakfast of Course is massively popular and people start lining up outside before the restaurant is even open to get a table. While I am usually not a huge fan of waiting in lines, the food at Breakfast of Course is just that good that I was willing to drag my family out into the cold to stand in line for half an hour. I feel like I wouldn’t feel this passionately about the matter if my friends would actually wake up early enough to go with me, but sadly I usually have to wait until my parents come to visit.
Located in the Arts District of Winston-Salem, Breakfast of Course has a funky interior and everyone who works in the restaurant is laid-back and friendly. While waiting to be seated, I spotted a little chalkboard sign that proudly announced that they do not have wifi and that customers should be talking to one another instead of playing around on their phones. As anyone who knows me can tell you, I’m a bit addicted to my phone but I just loved the sentiment that meals should be about spending time with loved ones rather than checking Instagram or Twitter.
The four of us were seated at a table with the most charming flower arrangement . Breakfast of Course is eclectic in its decoration choices in the fact that no coffee mugs match another and each table has a different salt & pepper shakers. This time around, our shakers were fortune cookies labeled with “Good Fortune” and “Bright Future,” just the kind of encouragement I needed after midterms!
And how adorable is this tea cup!? I have to admit that I was very tempted to take it home with me as a souvenir but I resisted the urge.
That Sunday was also the Winston-Salem PRIDE Weekend, so there were several specials on the menus that celebrated the occasion. My grandmother ordered the “Over the Rainbow” french toast which came with sprinkles and whipped cream and tasted just as good as it looks.
Dad and I weren’t quite as adventurous and ordered off of the regular menu. Dad ordered the standard Cinnamon Swirl French Toast while I went for my usual Breakfast Club with turkey bacon and a side of home fries.
I cannot express how much I love this breakfast sandwich. The combination of a fried egg, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and turkey bacon between two slices of wheat toast probably makes me happier than it should. But I mean, come on, look at that gooey goodness that was my breakfast!! I usually eat oatmeal in the mornings so it’s always nice to switch it up and go for savory breakfast dishes.
Breakfast of Course is most definitely in my top 5 favorite restaurants in Winston-Salem and you can bet that you’ll find me there even after I graduate during Homecoming Weekend.
