Last weekend my friends and I went out to a restaurant in Winston that I’ve heard a lot about but never been to, Five Points, for my friend’s birthday. The restaurant claims to “Winston-Salem’s finest,” and it’s hard to argue with the diverse menu selections and a staff almost overly eager to assist. We had a large party (there were about twelve of us) and we were seated in our very own room which the other diners in the restaurant were probably thankful for once our conversation got into full swing!
I started dinner off with the fire-roasted tomato bisque and a glass of Pinot Noir, which was recommended to me by our lovely waiter. The soup was deliciously creamy but the real star of the show was the restaurant’s bread rolls. My friend Alex really hit the nail on the head when she described them as “doughnut holes without the sugary covering.” The taste actually reminded me of mini-funnel cakes and it was love at first bite for all of us. It was a struggle to not have more than one, but I constantly ruin my appetite by eating too much bread and I somehow found the willpower to hold off from eating 6+ rolls.
Basically the bread roll of my dreams.
For my entrée, I ordered the Mediterranean Ahi Tuna Salad. Tossed with with an olive tapenade vinaigrette and feta cheese crumbles, the salad was delicious although the arugula to tuna ratio was way off; I mean I eat salads pretty regularly but I enjoy them more for their toppings than for the leafy greens themselves.
After finishing dinner, we sang happy birthday to Lindsay and promptly devoured the dessert sampler our waiter brought out for us. As anyone can tell you, college girls go a little crazy over dessert and it totally didn’t hurt that the sampler tray was on the house. I can’t remember what the three dishes were exactly but it was something like white chocolate bread pudding, cheesecake and a chocolate torte; one of my friend’s was ambitious and ordered a full-sized portion of chocolate cake with ice cream to herself which proved to be a bit of a struggle.
Before we left, we did the typical “sorority squat” and had our waiter take our picture. I’m one of the shortest people in my friend group (you can see Mary Helen in front of me doing some serious squatting) so I’m a bit confused about how I ended up in the back but we somehow managed to make it work!
Overall, I think that Five Points was an awesome venue for a birthday dinner. The menu is fairly pricey so I would definitely recommend taking parents to eat there when they come to visit.
