Healthy Snacking with Nākd Bars

February 15, 2016

I feel like even with all of the trips I’ve been taking lately, I’ve actually stuck with my new year’s resolutions much more successfully than I have in the past. I’ve been going to the gym 3+ times a week, eating more vegetables and protein (this salmon recipe is amazing!), and, other than all of the Bloody Marias I drank to keep warm in NYC this weekend, I really haven’t been overindulging in alcohol.

But where I have the hardest time keeping myself on the healthy track is when it comes to snacking. If you were to put a family size bag of Smartfood popcorn in front of me, there’s a good chance that I could get through an impressive amount while watching The Bachelor. And I’ve found that even some of my favorite breakfast bars have an impressive amount of preservatives and other ingredients that I don’t believe to be healthy for the body in the long run. Luckily for me, our friends at Natural Balance Foods have just the solution for us—Nākd Bars.

6th & Vine

May 28, 2015

Have you ever fell in love with something and felt like you’d never find anything like it ever again? That’s how I felt after eating what I thought was the end-all of baked brie while in London two years ago. Brie on its own is delicious. Baking brie so that the cheese is all gooey and melts in your mouth is nothing less than heavenly. So I was somewhat in mourning over the fact that I’d never find another baked brie like it ever again… And boy, was I wrong!

6th & Vine is one of my new favorite finds in the Arts District of Winston-Salem. I’d heard rave reviews of the food and drinks but I didn’t try it for myself until earlier this past spring. The menu’s varied and the specials are always delicious sounding and I’m pretty sure that they source their ingredients locally.

Warm Apple Crisp for a Cold Winter’s Night

December 30, 2014

When I think of July 4th, one of the first things that pops into my mind is good ol’ apple pie. The epitome of American cuisine, along with its equally famous cousin the hot dog, apple pie is near and dear to my heart. So how does this dish transition into the fall and winter? By becoming apple crisp, of course! A crisp is a baked fruit dessert topped with crunchy layer of deliciousness and baked until the topping is a golden brown.

I found that this recipe can feed at least six people, maybe more if portion size was smaller. Note of warning: this recipe is not the healthy in the least bit; I could almost feel my arteries clogging with all of the butter and sugar I used. However, as Parks and Recreation taught us, it’s always a good idea to “treat yo’self” from time to time!

Zia Taqueria

December 27, 2014

Last week dad and I went to the local cinema to see Birdman. It’s not a new release and it’s darker than most films I usually watch, but I would definitely recommend renting it.

Afterward we headed out next door to the Mexican restaurant, Zia Taqueria. The best way I can think to describe the atmosphere of the restaurant is hipster cool with amazing tasting food. There are locations in the Charleston area, as well as in Asheville, North Carolina.

Wild Olive Cucina

December 13, 2014

While back home for Thanksgiving, dad and I went to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants on Johns Island, Wild Olive Cucina. We first dined at Wild Olive three summers ago and I’ve been in love with the menu ever since. The cuisine is simple and seasonal, while staying true to its Italian roots. Wild Olive is also a ‘Certified Green Restaurant’ (the first of which in South Carolina!), and not only do they buy the majority of their produce and meats locally but they also compost 85% of their compost. So awesome!! So not only is the food heavenly but also environmentally friendly, every Environmental Studies minor’s dream restaurant.

The Porch

November 19, 2014

A couple weeks ago, two friends and I decided to get dinner at a restaurant that opened in Winston last year, The Porch. While I’d heard that the food was amazing, I didn’t realize how popular The Porch actually was until it took us forever to find parking on a Thursday night.
