One of my favorite parts about college was the fact that I lived within walking distance of most of my friends. In fact, it usually took me about a five minute walk max to make it from my apartment to another apartment or house.
So it was hard for me when I graduated and moved up north, which meant that to see the majority of my friends even for just a weekend I would have to either catch a train or hop on a plane. Despite the distance, I try my best to keep in touch and keep up with each other’s lives whether that means sending a text or actually picking up the phone and giving them a call.
Here are a few ideas that will help you keep in touch with long-distance friends, no matter if they live 20 miles or 2,000 miles away!
I’ve always been a HUGE fan of receiving snail mail since it’s really not hat common anymore, minus all of the junk mail I constantly seem to get about opening a new credit card. So when a friend’s birthday comes along or I just a card that reminds me of them, I like to let them know that they’re on my mind by sending a handwritten note.
Plan girls’ weekends
Girls’ weekends are another big favorite of mine. Whether that means staying the weekend in your friend’s apartment and catching up over wine or planning a trip to a city that none of you have been to before, you really can’t beat seeing each other in person and making up for lost time. A few friends and I were discussing a possible girls’ trip this summer to Nashville, which would be so much fun!
Tag each other in Facebook and Instagram posts
I consider this to be the digital equivalent of writing letters, although it’s obviously quicker and easier to do since you don’t have to deal with the line at the post office. I spend an embarrassing amount of time on social media and so when I find a hilarious post or a meme that reminds me of a friend, I like to tag them for a quick laugh. TBH I usually get tagged primarily in posts about being a crazy girlfriend, but whatever (haha!).
Pick up the phone and either give a call or FaceTime
I will admit that I’m one of those people who is not a huge fan of talking on the phone. I’m 100% more likely to make a reservation at a restaurant if I can use OpenTable or Resy just because it’s so convenient. But sometimes you just have certain stories that have to be told over the phone because they are either super amazing or just plain weird and you need to tell someone RIGHT NOW. So yeah, I don’t hate talking on the phone in those cases.
