Y’all I’m feeling a bit slow after the past two weekends. I had so much visiting friends in Atlanta and Washington, DC, but definitely drank too much wine and ate way too biscuits. I eat fairly healthfully throughout the work week and go to the gym 4-5 times a week but even with that I’ve noticed that I’ve been bloated and tired in the mornings, which in itself is motivation to eat healthier!
And we all know that a well-stocked kitchen is a happy kitchen!
Here are 10 essential healthy foods that I always keep in my kitchen, and actually enjoy eating throughout the week:
Avocados are the ultimate super food for me because not only are they packed with super-healthy fats, but they also taste AMAZING as well on toast and in smoothies.
Bag of greens
Spinach is probably one of my favorite veggies, mostly because you can use it in so many dishes such as smoothies, egg scrambles, and pasta dishes! Dark leafy greens provide lots of protein and iron for very few calories, as well as being great for skin and hair health.
Whole grain pasta and rice
I love a good bowl of pasta just as much as the next person, but I try to stick with whole grain products because I’ve read that complex carbohydrates > simple carbohydrates. Also quinoa and arrow are staples in my household.
I LOVE fuit. Specifically bananas, all berries, and apples, which I can eat all day long. I love that I can throw them into smoothies, salads, and even eat them for dessert at night if I’m craving something to cure my sweet tooth.
Eggs are hands-down the easiest an quickest things to make for breakfast, which is saying something since I’m always running around in the mornings to get ready for work. My favorite way to make them is to fry them (aka sunny side up) and splash a little hot sauce, specifically with Sriracha.
Peanut (or almond) butter
I could literally eat peanut butter straight from the jar most days, but I do like to also use it in smoothies and pasta sauces for a little variety. Peanut butter really is an addiction of mine!
Canned beans are full of protein and fiber, and are literally so easy to prepare for a meal in a matter of minutes. I usually like to make a southwestern-style salad with cannellini beans, black beans, corn, avocado, and olive oil and vinegar, or just throw the beans on top of spinach salad for a little more protein.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
I use EVOO for almost every meal I cook, so much so that I finally invested in a nice bottle from Trader Joe’s a few months ago.
Grilled chicken and sautéed vegetables is another super easy dinner option that’s one of my favorites, mostly because it’s so filling and makes me feel healthy AF for not ordering takeout instead. Plus the fact that you an freeze chicken until you’re ready to use it, which means that I can buy it in bulk!
At some point in my life I’ll start making my own hummus but for now I’ll stick with my favorite Trader Joe’s organic brand. Spread across some pita bread or snacked on with carrots, hummus is my favorite snack to keep myself full during the work day.
Good for eye health and just really fun to snack on, carrots are great to snack on throughout the day. I tend to either eat them plain or with hummus.
