Travel Washington DC

Postcards from // An Afternoon in DC

April 8, 2015

I spent the last few days of spring break a few weeks ago at my friend Hana’s house, who lives just outside of Washington DC. With a little nudging (i.e. continuous bugging), Hana agreed to take me downtown for the afternoon so that I could once again walk around one of my favorite cities. We were only in DC for a few hours and during most of our visit it rained cats and dogs. But even rain can’t cover the beauty of our nation’s capital!

So much sushi was eaten that weekend and I’m not one to complain about that.

We spent over two hours walking around the Holocaust Museum, which I would highly recommend if you are ever in D.C. Although it is not for young children, the museum is highly informative and I’ll admit that I cried multiple times through the main exhibition. I believe in the old saying that we need to learn from our past and the Holocaust Museum is such a place to do so.

Our next stop was walking along the mall while the rain fell around us.

Posing in front of the White House is probably the most touristy thing that you can do in D.C. but I’ve never done it before and couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by.

Street art we found while getting lost looking for where we parked the car.

I finally got to try pho for the first time! I still have no idea how to actually pronounce it but the soup was absolutely delicious, especially with the fried tofu.

The ride back to Wake was about 5 hours but at least the views the entire drive were beautiful like this. So it made being cooped up in the car for most of the day much more enjoyable, as did Hana’s music playlist.

    • I feel pretty lucky that I’ve been to DC twice in the past year but it had been about 8 years since I’d been to the city before that. It’s such a pretty city, especially in the spring with all of the cherry blossoms!

  • Wow, lovely photos and text! I remember when I was walking through Washington DC, such a beautiful town. Unfortunately, we didn’t had time to visit the Holocaust Museum although it seemed interesting. Have a nice day,

    • Oh I’m so jealous that you’ll be up in DC! My favorite parts of the city is definitely a tie between having free access to all of the museums along the Mall and walking around the quieter streets and pointing out which houses where I’d like to live in the future!

  • Where did you have sushi? I also love sushi, and am always on the hunt for a new place!

And Pho is generally pronounced “fuh” 🙂

    • I’m a sushi fanatic as well. I wish I knew what restaurant we went to but it’s one that my friend and her family have been eating at for years. And I’m glad that I’ve finally met someone who knows how to pronounce pho!
